27.8.2021 Making progress without pedalling, our destination Laveno was soon in sight as the ferry made its way across Lake Maggiore. Laveno has a special memory for me, because on a 1980 cycle trip from Sainte Maxime to Munich I stayed with a colleague of my father (Emilio Ballarin) at his summer house in Caldana di Cocquio Trevisago, in the hills above Varese, and on the Saturday night I was driven with a big group of his children and their friends, all in their late twenties so much older than me, to Laveno "per gelato". To be honest I didn't really know what was going on, but they all made a great fuss of me and the animated conversations standing about in the warm summer evening air whilst consuming gelato made a lasting impression on me.
